​Check Your Eligibility for a J-1 Program

​Determine whether you qualify for one of our sponsored programs.
​We’ve outlined the key requirements below to help you understand your eligibility before applying

  • Do you have a background — educational or professional — that's related to your desired training field?
  • Can you communicate effectively in English?
  • Are you prepared to commit to a full-time training program in the U.S.?

Choose Your Program

Eligibility depends on which program you are applying for:
  • J-1 Intern Program: For students and/or recent graduates
  • J-1 Trainee Program: For professionals with prior work experience​​​

J-1 Intern Program Eligibility

You may qualify for the Internship Program if you meet one of the following.

Option 1: Current Student
  • You are currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S.
  • Your field of study is related to the internship you are seeking

Option 2: Recent Graduate
  • You graduated within the past 12 months
  • Your degree/diploma is related to the internship field you are seeking

Additional Requirements:
  • Sufficient English proficiency to participate in a professional environment
  • Willingness to engage in a structured training program (not casual employment)
  • Ability to demonstrate intend to return to your home country after program-completion

J-1 Trainee Program Eligibility

You may qualify for the Trainee Program if you meet one of the following:

Option 1: Degree + Experience
  • You hold a degree from a post-secondary institution; and
  • You have earned at least 1 year of work experience outside the U.S. that's related to your desired program field

Option 2: Work Experience (No Degree)
  • You have earned a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in your field/industry

Additional Requirements
  • Your training must be related to your professional background
  • You must not be entering an "unskilled" or casual labor role
  • You must have the ability to demonstrate intent to return to your home country after program-completion

General Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a clear training or internship objective
  • Meet U.S. Department of State regulations for the J-1 Visa
  • Demonstrate non-immigrant intent (plan to return home after program completion)

Who May Not Qualify

You may not be eligible if:
  • You are seeking permanent employment in the U.S.
  • You do not meet the minimum education or work experience requirements
  • You are currently residing in the U.S. ​
