Pre-Departure Guidance

​Preparing for Your Journey to the United States
​Congratulations on your upcoming J-1 program!

This guidance will help you prepare for your travel and arrival in the United States so you can begin your experience with confidence.

Before You Travel

​Make sure you complete the following steps before your departure:
  • Review your DS-2019 Form: Know your program dates and details
  • Secure your housing arrangements (if applicable)
  • Confirm your flight itinerary with Pan Atlantic and your Host Organization
  • Review arrival instructions from your host company

​Important Documents

​Keep the following documents in your carry-on bag (not checked luggage):
  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay)
  • J-1 Visa (located in your passport)
  • DS-2019 Form
  • SEVIS (I-901) receipt of payment
  • Host company details and address
  • Sponsor contact information
*You may be asked to present these documents upon arrival*

What To Pack

Essentials:
  • ​Clothing appropriate for your destination’s climate
  • Comfortable shoes for program shifts and daily activities
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Prescription medications (with documentation)
Recommended:
  • ​Copies of important documents
  • Power adapters (U.S. outlets may differ)
  • A reasonable amount of U.S. currency

Housing Preparation

  • ​Confirm your housing address and move-in date
  • Understand rent, deposits, and payment methods
  • Communicate with roommates or landlords (if applicable)
